Record travel demands more airport security screeners
The Associated Press

CHANTILLY, Va. - Dulles International Airport is dealing with one of the
country's largest shortages of baggage screeners as federal officials are
preparing for a record summer travel season.

Both Dulles and Reagan National Airport need more Transportation Security
Administration screeners to deal with the summer rush. The TSA has announced
it's expecting a record 200 (m) million summer air travelers nationwide.

Washington area airport officials say they're expecting at least the same
number of travelers as last year.

A TSA spokesman says they'll be ready, despite the current shortage.

The agency recently changed the way it hires screeners. Previously a private
contractor hired workers and conducted background checks. But now federal
authorities must do the hiring for the airports.

The TSA also is offering its current screeners bonuses to stay on the job.
