Lockheed gets green light to test airport explosives detection units
The Associated Press
OWEGO, N.Y. - An upstate Lockheed Martin unit soon will start what's
expected to be the last phase in developing an advanced airport explosives
detection technology.
Lockheed's Owego site -- just west of Binghamton -- is leading a team to
improve existing detection equipment.
The company today announced that the federal Transportation Security
Administration has awarded a contract to test the units at two busy U-S
airports.
Lockheed says the devices will be field-tested at John Wayne Airport in
Orange County, California, and at Sky Harbor International Airport in
Phoenix, Arizona.
A Lockheed official says the enhanced technology should boost the security
of air travel while enabling airports to run efficiently.
