Gas Station Off Runway Worries Airport Manager
The Associated Press
JOLIET - This week's fatal accident at Chicago's Midway Airport has added to
the worries of Joliet Regional Airport manager Bill Reuter.
Reuter was worried earlier, and the vision of the plane skidding off the
runway and through the airport fence only makes it worse. Reuter's special
concern is the Citgo gas station someone built last year right off the end
of his small airport's runway.
The Federal Aviation Adsministration shares Reuter's worry that a plane
making a botched landing could hit the gas station and cause a horrific
fire. But according to Reuter and the federal agency, there's not much they
can do about it because the service station is built on private land.
