Dayton International Airport director dies

Eugene "Blair" Conrad Jr., the city of Dayton's director of aviation, died
Friday afternoon after a long battle with cancer, according to a press
release from the Dayton International Airport. 
 
Harvey Wortham, superintendent of airport administration, will serve as
interim director. The city will conduct a search for a permanent
replacement. 

Conrad, who was 58, took control of Dayton International Airport in 1998 and
has guided the airport through a master plan update and a terminal
renovation and has set the stage for the development of a new parking garage
and air traffic control tower. 

Conrad was born Aug. 19, 1946, in Winston Salem, N.C. He earned his
bachelor's degree in aviation management from Auburn University in 1969,
along with his private pilot's license. He attended flight school at Fort
Rucker Army Aviation Center, where he learned to fly the OV-1 Mohawk, before
serving in Vietnam from 1970-1971. 

He received his master's degree in 1974 in systems management from the
University of Southern California. 

In 1975, he became manager of Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis. In
1987, he was named executive director of Huntsville (Ala.) International
Airport. In 1995, he took over as director of Worcester (Mass.) Regional
Airport, where he served until moving to Dayton. 

Conrad also served as a trustee of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, a
board of managers member for the National Museum of The United State Air
Force Foundation, as well as a trustee for the United States Air and Trade
Show Inc.
