Indianapolis airport may soon go wireless
The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis International might soon join a growing
number of airports around the world with wireless Internet access.

Airport officials were sketching out a plan to offer "Wi-Fi" throughout the
passenger terminal, including the gates, food court, ticketing and baggage
claim areas.

The eight-member Indianapolis Airport Authority could vote on the proposal
by July 22. Officials were working with SBC Communications to provide the
service, perhaps by the end of the year. Officials said the cost of the
service was not yet determined.

Passengers likely will be charged about $8 for 24 hours on SBC's FreedomLink
service, a typical fee at many airports. SBC spokesman Mike Marker said
those who are already FreedomLink members would gain access at no additional
charge.

Indianapolis is one of dozens of major airports across the nation to install
or consider installing wireless Internet access as the technology and the
means to use it, including lighter laptops, have become more widespread.

"Airports are communications-intensive venues," said Joe Beatty, president
of Chicago-based Concourse Communications Corp., one of the nation's largest
providers of airport Wi-Fi. "People at airports have a need to communicate,
and they have time to communicate."
