Airport authority will operate baggage system
By Jim Ritchie
The Pittsburgh (PA) Tribune Review
The Allegheny County Airport Authority projects saving about $2 million
annually by operating the baggage system at Pittsburgh International Airport
itself.
The authority created a department called Airline Services and hired 46
people to operate the system that moves checked luggage on a matrix of
conveyors to and from airliners.
US Airways stopped managing the baggage system in March 2004 to save money.
Since then, the authority has paid a private contractor to run the system.
The authority estimates its annual cost at $5 million -- $2 million less
than it's paying a private contractor, Executive Director Kent George said
at Friday's authority board meeting.
The authority plans to announce its decision, along with changes in gate
operations, at a Monday news conference.
