ARN Releases Top 50 Performing Airports for
2005
Press Release The figures found in the ninth edition of ARN’s Fact Book were culled from the participating 84 airports (based on 2004 data). The numbers show a marked increase across the board from the year before. Remarkably, the increase in overall sales for the top 50 performers in the specialty retail, food & beverage and news & gifts categories significantly outpaced the 8% increase in enplanements. “This is a notable achievement since historically sales increases have typically kept pace with passenger traffic,” says Pauline Armbrust, publisher of ARN. “This means that the operators and their airport partners are implementing effective strategies to really drive sales.” Total sales for these categories increased 13.4% over the year prior with passenger enplanements increasing 8%. The combined average sales per enplanement for food & beverage, retail, news & gifts for the top 50 airports for CY2004 was $6.76 or nearly 5% higher than CY2003 (average sales/EP in 2003 was $6.46). For the second year in a row Pittsburgh International (PIT) tops the list with an up-tick in sales per enplanement to $10.88 from $10.08 the year before (an 8% increase). This increase puts PIT nearly 13% higher than the closest top performer, New York’s JFK. This feat is even more notable considering PIT had a 7% drop in enplanements. Several airports made noteworthy achievements. The highest rising entrant on the top 50 list is Winnipeg (YWG), coming in third with a sales per enplanement of $8.46. Of the airports that experienced a total sales upswing, New York (JFK) made the biggest splash with a 30% jump.
