Airport educating travelers on lighter ban
The Troy (NY) Record
ALBANY - The Transportation Security Administration and Albany International
Airport began a month-long informational campaign designed to prepare
travelers for new security regulations that will ban all lighters from
carry-on luggage.
The TSA has announced that all lighters will be prohibited in carry-on
luggage and from all sterile areas of the airport beginning April 14.
Lighters and matches have been banned in checked luggage by the Department
of Transportation.
Beginning Thursday, signs were posted at all ticket counters informing
travelers of the new security regulations. In addition, signage has also
been placed at the security checkpoint.
"We strongly recommend that travelers thoroughly examine their carry-on
luggage and their pockets before traveling to the airport," said Paul
Varille, Federal Security Director at the Albany International Airport. "By
avoiding bringing lighters to the airport, passengers will accelerate the
security screening process."
The ban on all lighters on aircraft includes butane, absorbed-fuel
(Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters and other fuels.
The regulation comes following the December 2004 approval of a provision in
the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, which was
signed into law by the president on Dec. 17.
The new security guidelines will also prohibit concessions located in the
secure terminal area from selling lighters of any kind. The Paradies
Corporation which operates news stands and gift shops at Albany
International Airport has already stopped selling lighters in the terminal.
The new regulation does not affect regular "matchbook" matches. Passengers
will still able to carry two matchbooks on board the aircraft.
"Strike-Anywhere" matches are prohibited.
