Man charged with trying to defraud Miami International Airport
The Miami (FL) Herald
Police arrested a man they described as a would-be contractor on Thursday
for allegedly forging documents in order to land a job tinting windows at
Miami International Airport.
In a joint investigation with the Miami-Dade Inspector General's Office,
state prosecutors charged Alexis J. Riveron, 29, with three counts of
forgery, three counts of uttering a forged instrument and one count of grand
theft. Each count can lead to five years of jail time.
Riveron submitted a bid on behalf of his Hialeah-based company, AVY Group,
Inc., for a two-year, $30,000 contract to tint windows at the airport
terminals, authorities said.
Investigators say Riveron created fake insurance documents on his computer
to meet the contract's requirement for at least $500,000 in automobile
liability insurance. A county employee became suspicious after Riveron
submitted the documents to Miami-Dade.
''This is just another example of making sure that contractors who do
business with the county must be honest and beyond reproach, and wherever we
find any misgivings we'll take appropriate action,'' said Inspector General
Chris Mazzella.
