Airport's Isdell aims for top job in Miami
The Philadelphia (PA) Inquirer
With three years left in his term, Mayor Street could find himself with yet
another top spot to fill.
City Aviation Director Charles Isdell is one of 221 people vying to be the
head honcho at Miami International Airport.
Isdell, who was attending a conference in Germany yesterday, did not respond
to an e-mail.
A Philadelphia government employee of 32 years, Isdell, 54, is five months
shy of the age requirement for enrolling in the city's retirement-incentive
program.
Isdell was appointed by Street in December 2000 after the mayor's
controversial firing of Alfred Testa Jr. He has led Philadelphia
International Airport through the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and helped lure
low-fare carrier Southwest Airlines. During the same period, the airport has
been embroiled in the municipal corruption investigation, from questions
about its concessions operations to its bond deals.
Isdell, who earns $150,000 a year, applied Jan. 7 to head Miami-Dade
County's aviation department, according to an e-mail Isdell sent to a county
employee. The e-mail was released as a public record under Florida law.
If he's successful, he stands to get a raise: The maximum salary for the
Miami job is $230,854.
