Airport expansion costs Dh3.3bn
United Kingdom - The Economist
The planned modernisation and extension of several of Morocco's 12 airports
will cost Dh3.3bn in 2005-08, according to government figures. Of the total,
some Dh2.6bn will be spent on construction and Dh660m on equipment. The
biggest single development is the Dh855m extension of Mohammed V airport in
Casablanca that will see capacity double to 8m passengers by 2008. A new
terminal of 40,000 sq metres will be built, along with facilities for ten
aircraft to be handled simultaneously and a new control system that will
allow landings in fog. A loan for 90% of the total cost has been provided by
the ADB. Other airport terminals being expanded are those at Tangiers, Al
Hoceima, Essaouira, Errachidia and Dakhla, while runways will be lengthened
and hard-standings extended to accommodate more and bigger aircraft at
Marrakesh, Tangiers and Al Hoceima. The priority of the state airport
authority, Office national des aeroports, is to support the government's
goal to increase tourist numbers to 10m by 2010. Morocco has also received a
grant from the US to fund a study of the feasibility of privatising the
country's airports.
