Beijing to build 2nd airport after 2010
China - Business Daily Update
Beijing will build a second airport after 2010 in the south of the city to
help divert traffic from the existing facility in the northeast of the
capital, the Beijing Morning News reported. The city planners have yet to
decide on the exact location or more specific timing for the airport, the
paper said, citing local government officials. The existing facility,
Beijing Capital International Airport, which started operation in 1958,
handled 34.88 million passengers last year, up 43.2 percent from a year
earlier. The airport has been expanded several times over the past few
decades, and is now undergoing another expansion aimed at nearly tripling
its current passenger traffic to 60 million by 2007.
