Role of airports
By W.M. Ramli
Malaysia - The New Straits Times
MASSIVE relief operations are in progress in countries struck by tidal
waves.
Army and commercial cargo planes from various nations transporting food,
medicine and heavy equipment were seen making the necessary stopovers at
RMAF bases and the Langkawi International Airport.
Stopovers are inevitable for various reasons - logistic support and in some
case there was need to re schedule the times of arrival as airports of their
destinations were not able to accommodate them due to increase volume of
traffic.
In view of this do we really need to write off the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah
Airport, better known as Subang Airport, strategically situated in the Klang
Valley all in the name of "redundancy" in peace time?
I hope serious re-evaluation is done on the importance of having another
commercial airport which can play a role in an unexpected situation like the
tsunami disaster.
