Horizon can't cancel service to city airport
The Salem (OR) Statesman Journal
The federal government has told Seattle-based Horizon Air that it cannot
cancel service to the Pendleton airport this spring, at least for now, even
though the airline has said that there are too few travelers to support the
route.
The U.S. Department of Transportation made the order under guidelines
established for rural areas that are far from major airports. Airlines
serving such communities are eligible for a federal subsidy.
In December, Horizon, which has reported declining boardings at Pendleton
since 2000, filed a 90-day notice of intent to terminate service April 3.
But the federal government's order requires the airline to "continue
providing essential air service at the community for an initial 30-day
period after its proposed termination date."
At least two other airlines -- Big Sky Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines --
have expressed interest in serving Pendleton.
