Move could save Hickory $200,000.

City leaders want the state to help pay for establishing airline service to
Hickory.

The Hickory City Council on Tuesday night approved a measure that would save
Hickory $200,000. The action would let the city use state grant money to
offset $273,000 budgeted for television, radio and direct mail advertising
and overnight crew accommodations. The city would spend $73,000 instead.

An original proposal by the North Carolina Department of Transportation
specified service from six smaller airports to Raleigh-Durham International
Airport. The department's aviation division recently requested that the
federal government allow Hickory to use its portion of a $1.2 million grant,
or $200,000, to help pay for the expenses.

The move must be approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Delta Air Lines announced plans in December to begin service linking Hickory
and Atlanta this spring. Three daily flights are planned on Delta's
subsidiary, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, beginning May 1.
