Army to Sell Airports, Chance for Civil Aviation
The Polish News Bulletin of the British and American Embassies

The number of civil airports may increase dramatically over the next few
years, as the Polish Army is willing to sell some of its airstrips or at
least split their maintenance costs. "Airports are a huge financial burden,
so if a constructive offer was submitted, we would gladly get rid of them,"
said Jerzy Rasilewicz, chairman of the Agency for Military Property (AMW).
The Agency is not only thinking about getting rid of the problem, but also
sees an opportunity to make money. "By selling the airstrips we would obtain
funds for the modernisation of the army," added Rasilewicz. However, the
price for each military airport is fixed by a property expert and cannot be
changed. According to Rasilewicz, the tenders for airports in Nowe Miasto
and Slupsk are about to be completed in the next few weeks, while the sale
of airstrips in Wdzydze and Zegrze Pomorskie is being negotiated.
