EU approves Macquarie takeover of Belgian Airport Co
The Associated Press

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union on Monday cleared Australian airport
operator Macquarie Airports' ?745 million (US$ 1 billion) purchase of a 70
percent stake in Belgian airport operator BIAC.

BIAC, which owns and operates Belgium's main Zaventem airport on the
outskirts of Brussels, is currently 63.6 percent owned by the Belgian
government, with the remainder controlled by Belgian banks, insurers, and
holding companies.

The government is keeping a 30 percent stake and said it planned to hold on
to its share. It will get ?352 million (US$ 470 million) from the sale,
which will be used to pay down the country's national debt.

All the private shareholders have sold their stake.

The decision to partially privatize BIAC was made at the beginning of the
year.
