IATA head rips confused airport security
United Press International

Paris, France, (UPI) -- The head of the group that represents airlines
carrying nearly all of the world's travelers says airport security remains a
confusing mess.

"There is no cooperation," said Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the
International Air Travel Association. "I could understand if for eight
months it's a mess, but after three years it's inexcusable.

"Governments have failed miserably at coordinating and harmonizing measures.
We are left to battle bureaucracy when we should be helping to fight
terrorism."

Bisignani particularly criticized European and U.S. officials for issuing
contradictory orders to airlines and sometimes not even talking to each
other across national borders, the International Herald Tribune reported
Friday.

Besides all the confusion about security, Bisignani slammed airport security
officials for excluding airlines from discussions about how best to make
commercial aviation safer from terrorists.

"Governments must understand that we can help them achieve their goals if we
are part of the process. A solution is only effective if can be made
operable."

IATA members carry about 95 percent of the flying public.
