La Aurora airport project drums up interest

Work to improve La Aurora international airport in Guatemala City will begin
in the short-term, Guatemala's' civil aeronautics department director Jose
Antonio Presa told BNamericas.

"We are reaching airport capacity limits at La Aurora, and so we want to
increase capacity and build another terminal with six or seven gates,
together with the respective waiting areas," he said.

An international tender will be held "in the short term" for the design,
construction and operations of that terminal, he said. However, bidding
rules are still being defined at the infrastructure ministry.

Once the terminal is built, another tender will be held to improve the
existing infrastructure, such as moving and repaving the current runway and
updating the terminal.

US, Mexican and European companies have expressed interest in the project,
estimated at US$136mn for upgrades and new infrastructure, he said,
declining to name specific companies.

La Aurora airport handles nearly 1 million passengers a year, and that is
expected to increase 3-5% a year for the next few years, he said.
