Probe at Milan's Malpensa airport exposes theft ring
The Associated Press
MILAN, Italy - Customs police at Milan's Malpensa airport said they detained
19 people Tuesday in the latest probe of an alleged thievery ring at the
airport.
Police said that jewelry, watches and paintings arriving from abroad as
cargo at FedEx Express at the airport were stolen and that some of those
detained were FedEx employees.
FedEx said in a statement that it will "continue to collaborate with Italian
authorities so that the guilty will be turned over to justice."
The airport has been plagued by a series of thefts. In 2002, police used
hidden cameras to spot baggage handlers pilfering through luggage and
storing stolen goods, including cell phones and cameras, in their lockers or
in waiting cars. Last year, airport authorities fired 18 employees, while 11
resigned, after a follow-up probe.
