Burbank, Calif., airport could delay renovation of baggage area
The Los Angeles (CA) Daily News
The Bob Hope Airport might postpone a planned $3.6 million upgrade of its
Terminal A baggage claim area until next fiscal year in order to focus on
other priorities, officials said Monday.
The Terminal A upgrade could be put on the back burner because officials are
focusing their energy on negotiating a proposed development agreement with
Burbank, said Victor Gill, spokesman for the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena
Airport Authority. A project to convert ground service equipment from diesel
to electricity is also taking time, he said.
For the same reason, a $500,000 security upgrade at the airport might also
be put on hold because a project to install a $3.5 million baggage
inspection system is more important, said Airport Commission President
Charles Lombardo.
"It's just we have a bunch of things going on right now and we need to
prioritize what things (get) done before others," Lombardo said.
"We're not cutting back on security at all. We're just changing the timing
on some things and don't want anyone to feel that we're doing anything to
make the place less safe."
The beginning of construction on the Terminal A upgrade was scheduled for
this fiscal year, which began July 1. Construction will take months and will
involve extending the open-air baggage carousel and enclosing it, which will
improve security, Gill said.
