Killeen airport shut down
The Associated Press
KILLEEN, Texas - Flights remained grounded Tuesday at Killeen-Fort Hood
Regional Airport after its Instrument Landing System stopped working and bad
weather arrived, an official said.
Arrivals and departures have been grounded since Sunday and more than 70
flights were canceled by Tuesday afternoon, said Lucy Aldrich, an assistant
to Aviation Director Don Christian.
"The bottom line ... is that there are no arriving or departing flights and
there will not be until the weather gets better and/or the ILS is repaired
by the Army," Christian told the Killeen Daily Herald.
The Army has the operating and maintenance responsibility for the airport's
landing system at the joint-use airport.
Fort Hood's Director of Aviation Ron Gerner said a crew would be working on
the system.
The fog that settled over the airport Monday was too much even for the
military's precision approach radar, Gerner said. The bad weather diverted a
visiting general's Monday flight to Waco.
