Official/ Airport may be built in Constanza
BNamericas.com
The Dominican Republic is planning to carry out a feasibility study to build
an international airport in Constanza within the country's Cordillera
Central region, according to the presidential website.
A local company will perform the one-month study, airport department
director Andres Van Der Horst told BNamericas.
Once the feasibility study - co-sponsored by the airport authority and the
national competition board - is concluded, the government will decide if it
will carry out the construction itself or issue a call for an international
concession tender, Van Der Horst said.
According to preliminary plans, a local, disused military base with a 2,000m
landing strip would be improved and modified to build the airport, which
would support tourism and local exports.
The airport would be key to increasing exports of fruit, vegetables and
flowers grown in Constanza valley, located in the Cordillera Central region.
The Inter-American Development Bank may help fund the project, he said.
