Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, along with Pernambuco state
governor Jarbas Vasconcelos, inaugurated the expansion of city Petrolina's
Senador Nilo Coelho airport, the state government reported.

Galvao Engenharia carried out the 37.8mn-real (US$13.5mn) project that
included extending the runway 250m to 3.25km, which will allow Boeing
747-400 aircraft to operate at the airport. The project also expanded the
plane staging area to 21,430 sq. m. from 13,150 sq. m.

The country's federal airport authority Infraero helped finance the works
that will promote exports, principally fruit shipments from the Sao
Francisco valley. The airport's capacity will increase to 150,000
passengers/y from 100,000/y.

Petrolina has more than 200,000 residents.
