Lisbon airport to boost landing fee exemptions to lure new routes
Agence France-Presse

LISBON, (AFP) - Lisbon's international airport will offer more exemptions
from landing fees in 2005 to airlines which begin new routes, or increase
the number of flights to existing destinations, in a bid to boost passenger
traffic, the airport's director said Wednesday.

The airport's budget for next year sets aside 400,000 euros (509,000
dollars) for such financial incentives, compared to 160,000 euros in 2004,
Francisco Severino told a news conference.

There are currently 49 airlines operating out of Lisbon's airport which
service 99 destinations, a record for the airport.

It handled about 9.6 million passengers last year, making it Portugal's
busiest airport, and is expected to process over 10 million passengers in
2004.

The government plans to spend up to 400 million euros (509 million dollars)
to expand the airport and enable it to handle 500 flights per day compared
to the current 314 by 2009.
