Regional airlines to discuss airport woes
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation
A summit will be held in Canberra today to discuss the future of regional
aviation amid fears access to major capital city airports is becoming more
difficult for smaller airlines.
Brian Candler, from the Regional Aviation Association of Australia, says the
problem stems from the privatisation of airports in the 1990s.
He says operations have become more difficult since the demise of Ansett,
when the major airports took back terminal facilities.
Mr Candler says small carriers cannot be denied runway access but there is
not much point if they cannot check in passengers.
"With regional aviation guaranteed access to the airports or to the runways,
if I can put it that way, they might not have access to the airport in
reality because their access to the runways is useless without access to
land-side facilities, " he said.
