Stress on more security at airport
INDIA - THE HINDU

The need for strengthening the airport security was emphasised by the
Commissioner of Police, T.P. Sundaramoorthy, here today.

Inaugurating the `Vigilance Awareness Week' at the Tiruchi Airport, Mr.
Sundaramoorthy said passengers entering the airport should be subjected to
stringent checking, irrespective of their positions, in order to create a
realisation among the public that entry into airport could not be taken for
granted.

He spoke of his earlier efforts to hand over airport security to the Central
Industrial Security Force, which, he said, was presently carrying out its
duty with a high degree of efficiency.

However, the passengers should be frisked before their entry into the
aircraft too, as an additional precautionary measure. Likewise, importance
should also be attached to foolproof scanning of baggages. Vigilance
awareness, celebrated in honour of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, an epitome of
honesty and efficiency, he said, had become essential in the current
context.

The Commissioner, earlier, administered an oath to airport employees to
uphold honesty in profession.

S. Sreekumar, Director, Tiruchi Airport, Airports Authority of India, said
being honest alone was not enough and it was essential on the part of the
individual concerned to be vigilant against corrupt happenings in any
organisation.

Though educated people were aware of the virtues of honesty, they were
influenced by unlimited desires and hence the need for such programmes. If
dishonesty prevailed despite the sensitisation programme, the erring
officials had to be punished severely, he observed.

N. Tirkey, Assistant Commandant, CISF, K.K. Bhaumik, Deputy General Manager,
Air Traffic Control, and D. Rajagopal, Deputy General Manager, Civil,
participated.

Distribution of pamphlets to air passengers, discussion and interaction with
passengers on vigilance awareness, speech competition, and display of
cartoon and posters, will mark the week-long celebration.
