Details of airport marketing director hire a secret
By Dena Levitz
The Augusta (GA) Chronicle
Augusta Regional Airport Director Buster Boshears announced Thursday that he
has hired a new marketing director, but he kept the details to himself.
All Mr. Boshears would tell aviation commissioners was that a woman from
outside the area had accepted his offer, filling the void left when Kathryn
Solee resigned in June.
Mr. Boshears' announcement and his decision without involving the aviation
commission in the interview process angered several commission members.
"I don't have any question in Buster's judgment. I just think we should have
the opportunity to at least review, especially with marketing," Commissioner
Sheila Paulk said. "The personnel chair should have had the opportunity to
sit in."
In response, Joe Scott, the chairman of the personnel committee, said he did
have "problems with what's gone on so far."
"I didn't know this until I sat down here today," he said of the hiring.
The airport director said the woman was chosen over two local people who had
marketing experience but lacked experience in aviation.
The incoming marketing director has not yet resigned from her current job,
which is why he would not release her name or those of the other candidates,
Mr. Boshears said. Her start date and salary are not yet set.
Cedric Johnson, the chairman of the commission, said there is no written
policy concerning the level of involvement commissioners have in hiring
airport managers but that a policy would be created soon.
