Two men, who allegedly told luggage screeners one of their bags contained a
bomb and would explode if opened, were arrested at Miami International
Airport, authorities said Wednesday.
The suspects, identified as Mizael Cabral and Daniel Correa, were preparing
to board a Brazil-bound flight Tuesday when they made the comments,
according to US Attorney Marcos Daniel Jimenez.
As a screener prepared to check the luggage, Cabral asked: "Did you find the
bomb in the bag yet?, and Correa added: "If you open the bag, it will
explode," according to Jimenez.
The incident occurred when Cabral's luggage was picked for further
inspection after going through an X-ray machine.
"The federal criminal complaint charges the defendants, knowing that the
information about the bomb threat was false, with willfully and maliciously,
and with reckless disregard for the safety of human life, giving false
information about that threat," Jimenez said in a statement.
The defendants could face up to five years jail and a fine of 250,000
dollars if charged.
"In these times of an elevated threat level, the security of our ports of
entry is a high priority. We will aggressively prosecute anyone who actually
or falsely threatens that security," Jimenez said.
