Police subdue wild driver at Vienna's airport after firing warning shots
The Associated Press
VIENNA, Austria - Police fired warning shots at a woman who drove a car at
high speed around Vienna's international airport, forcing pedestrians to
leap to safety before she entered a parking garage and was arrested,
authorities said Thursday.
The 33-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was taken to a
psychiatric hospital after her arrest Wednesday night, said Leo Lauber,
director of police at Vienna's Schwechat International Airport.
It was unclear whether she was hit by any of the three warning shots fired
at the tires of her car by airport police who gave chase.
Authorities said the woman wore a Muslim head covering, Austrian radio
reported. It said she crashed through police barriers and drove toward the
airport's departure terminal, and was stopped only after she drove the car
down a dead-end alley in a parking structure at the airport.
Police said the woman was incoherent when they arrested her. A doctor who
examined her diagnosed her as suffering from schizophrenia and ordered her
to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital for further evaluation and
treatment, authorities said.
