Aer Rianta chief to step down
Ireland - RTE News
Aer Rianta chief executive Margaret Sweeney is to leave the company.
A statement from the board of the airports operator said the Department of
Transport had failed to give the company clarification on her role as chief
executive in the future Dublin Airport Authority.
The statement said Ms Sweeney would exercise the termination clause in her
contract with effect from September 30 but would stay on for a transitional
period to facilitate the new incoming board of the Dublin Airport Authority,
which takes up office on October 1.
Aer Rianta will cease to exist on Thursday September 30, and its function
will be taken over by the Dublin Airport Authority on October 1.
On that day, two other interim boards will come into existence to run
Shannon and Cork, but all Aer Rianta assets will be held by the DAA until
next May at the earliest.
Meanwhile, unions at Aer Rianta have failed to agree on nominations for 12
worker-director positions on the new boards to run Dublin, Cork and Shannon
Airports.
Four seats have been reserved on each board for worker-directors. The
Department of Transport has invited the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to
nominate 12 people to fill the interim vacancies, as elections for
worker-directors are not due for some months.
But it is understood that SIPTU, which represents the vast majority of staff
at the company, is seeking three seats on each board. This would leave the
three other main unions at the company - IMPACT, the TEEU and Mandate - with
just one seat between them. Sources said that this was unacceptable to the
smaller unions.
It is understood that a meeting today on the issue was adjourned to allow
individual unions to consider their positions. Contacts are expected to
resume on Monday.
