Philadelphia airport cuts landing fees by 6 percent
The Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA - Citing financial hardships at the airlines, Philadelphia
International Friday said it has reduced landing fees by 6 percent.
The reduction comes nearly two weeks after troubled US Airways Group Inc.
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in two years.
US Airways, based in Arlington, Va., is the dominant carrier at the
Philadelphia airport.
The airport said it cut landing fees to $1.99 per 1,000 pounds of aircraft
weight from $2.12. The fees apply to each aircraft landing at the airport
and are meant to help fund airport operations.
The airport said the move will save airlines a combined $2.2 million in
fiscal 2005, which ends June 30, 2005.
"By reducing landing fees and other costs, we are doing what we can to
assist the carriers and ensure that the level of air service in Philadelphia
will be maintained," Charles Isdell, Philadelphia's director of aviation,
said.
The airport said it was able to cut landing fees because it has seen
increases in revenue from other sources. In fiscal 2004, the airport saw
record passenger traffic and air service expanded, which helped the
airport's finances.
US Airways officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
