Power outage at Oakland airport
The Oakland (CA) Tribune

OAKLAND -- A "significant" power outage at the Oakland International Airport
on Wednesday night didn't delay flights but did keep a lot of people busy
for about half an hour, an airport spokeswoman said.

Just before 8 p.m., power was lost to most of the airport, including
security screening, runway and taxi lights and both terminals, airport
spokeswoman Rosemary Varnes said.

Varnes said the outage lasted about half an hour. Around 10 p.m. there were
still some residual effects of the outage, with some airline offices and the
Terminal 1 baggage claim still without power.

Airport officials are investigating the cause of the blackout.

"All of our electricians are working toward getting power restored and doing
what they can to make sure this doesn't happen again," Varnes said.

Varnes said they "lucked out" and no air carrier flights were scheduled to
arrive during the half-hour the power was out. She said she wasn't sure of
departing flights.

Passenger-screening checkpoints remained closed after the power returned
while technicians recalibrated their equipment. A number of departing
passengers couldn't be screened in either terminal, Varnes said.

An Oakland police officer at the airport said power in both terminals was
completely out for about five minutes before emergency power kicked in.
