Putin Orders Russian Airport Security Transfer, Interfax Says
Bloomberg News
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered security controls at the
country's airports to be taken over by the Interior Ministry, Interfax
reported.
Putin instructed the government to draft legislation that will make
preflight checks and other security measures the ministry's
responsibility, Interfax reported, citing his press secretary Alexei
Gromov, as saying late yesterday in Moscow.
The president met government ministers to discuss the crashes on Tuesday
of two Russian passenger aircraft within minutes of each other, killing
all 89 passengers and crew. The aircraft were on flights from Moscow's
Domodedovo airport.
Russia's Federal Security Service, which is reviewing the flight
recorders from the airplanes to determine the causes of the crashes,
said yesterday it hasn't ruled out an act of terrorism. Putin said last
week he was concerned that rebels from Chechnya may try to carry out
attacks before the republic's presidential election on Sunday.
