Panel recommends against subdivision near Suffolk airport
The Virginian-Pilot

SUFFOLK - The Planning Commission on Tuesday voted 7- 5, with one
abstention, to recommend that the City Council deny a rezoning request
for a 191-home subdivision near the Suffolk Municipal Airport.

"We're a planning commission," said Commissioner E. Brian Pritchard.

"We need to plan for the future, not just for tomorrow."

Pritchard said he sees the airport as having "great commercial
potential," perhaps not for passengers but for cargo.

But others favored the zoning change, which would allow a subdivision
named Millstone on the 121 acres near U.S. 13, or Carolina Road.

Just consider the alternatives to residential development, urged
commissioner William S. Perry : auto graveyard, auto storage lot,
junkyard, and amusement or equestrian center. "I think we're making a
mountain out of a mole hill," said commissioner James R. Rountree. "I'm
in favor of it."

Millstone's developers have offered to make improvements to nearby
intersections and to make payments of $3,000 for each home to cover the
cost of increased demands on police, fire and other city services.

The City Council will consider the rezoning request Sept. 15.
