Call to merge local airports
United Kingdom - The Western Mail & Echo
One of Wales' top transport experts has suggested that Cardiff should
throw its lot in with Bristol Airport and merge to attract bigger
airlines and flights to more destinations.: How the two compare:Cardiff
Airport, left, has the big advantage of a long enough runway for
transatlantic jumbo jets. Bristol's runway is shorter and could not be
extended without major works.
Bristol, right, has a bigger population in its immediate vicinity, being
closer to Bristol city than Cardiff airport is to Cardiff city. It is
closer to the motorway network - both M4 and M5 - than Cardiff airport.
Tolls on the Severn bridges are thought to be a bigger disincentive to
English travellers using Cardiff than to Welsh travellers (about 450,000
a year) using Bristol.
Cardiff will gain a major strategic advantage next year when its rail
link opens. Trains could potentially run from England to West Wales via
the airport. No serious plans have been formed for a rail link to
Bristol airport.
