Terror warning over airport staff screening
United Kingdom - The Scotsman
PILOTS have claimed that failures in screening would-be staff are
leaving British airports at risk of infiltration by terrorists.
Criminal record vetting agency Disclosure Scotland has come under fire
amid claims that the September 11 hijackers would have passed their
checks.
Since the end of July, the agency has had responsibility for vetting all
staff with access to the sensitive "airside" areas of UK airports.
But Disclosure Scotland has no way of checking on whether would-be staff
have been convicted of any crimes outside of Britain. One pilot said the
system is "a cosmetic exercise". Another added: "Disclosure Scotland are
a joke: all of the September 11th hijackers would have passed."
A Disclosure Scotland document stated: "Disclosure Scotland has no
jurisdiction to obtain criminal history information from other
countries."
