ARN's Releases 2004 Fact Book Results
Airport Concessions Performing at Full Speed
Press Release
Palm Beach Gardens, FL - Airport Revenue News (ARN) has released the
sales performance results for the top 50 performing airports in the 2004
edition of the Fact Book, a 450-page resource book containing the most
comprehensive information on airport concessions.
Currently in its eighth year of printing, the 2004 edition shows
interesting sales results from the participating 82 airports (based on
2003 data). In spite of a significant passenger traffic decreases,
concessionaires have managed to maximize their sales performance to
unprecedented levels.
The average sales per enplanement for food & beverage, retail, news &
gifts combined for the top 50 airports in CY2003 was $6.44 or nearly 3%
higher than the average in CY2002 (average sales/EP in 2002 was $6.26).
This increase occurred even as traffic decreased 7% and overall total
sales decreased 4% compared to the same period.
Also notable was that the average sales per enplanement for the top 10
performing airports increased 6% to $8.05 in 2003, compared to 2002.
"This shows how well airports and their concession partners can work
together to drive sales and maximize performance even in the wake of
challenging times," says Pauline Armbrust, publisher of ARN. "These
numbers are an incredible achievement for an industry that appears to be
turning the corner of a very trying period. It has been exciting to see
airports and concessionaires continuing to push quality standards ever
higher and exceed sales levels never believed attainable."
Leading the pack on performance was Pittsburgh International where
private developer BAA pushed sales per enplanement to an all time high
of $10.08, a 17% increase over its 2003 performance of $8.63 when it was
also the number one performer on ARN's Fact Book Top 50 list. It's 2003
achievement was attained even in the wake of a 21% decrease in
enplanements.
Another notable performer is Savannah International (SAV), which raised
its sales per enplanement by 11% in 2003 to $7.52, in the wake of a 3%
decrease in enplanements. This boosted SAV from 16th to 6th on ARN's
Best Performing list, surpassing many of its much larger counterparts.
