Airport security raised till November

Travelers will see higher security at Detroit Metro and other airports
between now and the November presidential election.
July 28, the Transportation Security Administration issued guidelines
urging airports to do more random vehicle and passenger inspections and
add local law enforcement to maintain security outside airports, said
Amy Von Walter, spokeswoman for the TSA in Arlington, Va.
But travel to New York and Washington D.C., which are under high
security alerts, is not expected to drop, said Cathy Keefe of the Travel
Industry Association of America.
"Tourists realize this is a new way of life. You can hole up in your
house or do what makes you happy, like traveling," Keefe said.
New York City predicts 36.6 million tourists this year, the best since
before Sept. 11, 2001. The Statue of Liberty reopened Tuesday for the
first time since then.
Washington, D.C., tourism rebounded in 2003 to 17.1 million visitors and
has drawn many tourists this year to the new World War II Memorial.
While domestic security was elevated last week, security also was
heightened in the Middle East.Americans last week were urged by the U.S.
State Department to leave Gaza and defer travel to Israel and the West
Bank following the kidnapping of an American in Nablus.
