Oakland Airport Conducts Counterterrorism Drill
San Francisco and Oakland Airport Discuss Drill
KNTV Ch 11 NBC, San Jose (CA)

OAKLAND -- Police officers performed a counterterrorism drill at Oakland
International Airport on Thursday.

The drill, sponsored by the Transportation Security Administration,
involved a number of agencies including the FBI, Oakland police, the
Alameda County Sheriff's Department, the Federal Aviation Administration
and the state Office of Emergency Services, according to airport
officials.

Oakland airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said that three specific
types of emergency situations were tested.

These included a hostage situation, a violation of the marine security
zone that extends 200 feet into the water around the airport and an
explosion in the airport's jet fuel farm.

The drill began around 5 a.m. and continued until noon.

Barnes said none of the emergency activity actually took place in the
terminals, and signs were posted along outer airport roadways to alert
people.

Barnes said San Francisco International Airport is also involved in the
drill.

According to SFO airport spokesman Mike McCarron, SFO officials are
conducting a "table top" exercise to meet and discuss with Oakland
airport what they should be doing together.

Possible assistance measures include landing Oakland aircraft at SFO,
making sure all SFO security systems are in effect and offering any
additional support.
