Dubai plans to build a 2nd airport at Jebel Ali
The Economist
Dubai International Airport is currently undergoing a major expansion to
help cope with the anticipated increase in demand, which includes
inbound, outbound and transit traffic through Dubai. In July the
English-language Gulf News reported that plans to build a second
commercial airport in Dubai have been brought forward. The Dubai
government has for several years had tentative plans to build an airport
at Jebel Ali, close to the "new" Dubai some 30 km west of the city
centre. This area is home to existing commercial centres such as Jebel
Ali Free Zone and the adjacent port, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media
City. It is also the location of existing beach hotels, as well as major
real estate developments including the two Palm Island land reclamation
projects, Dubai Marina and a number of other residential, retail,
tourism and entertainment developments. The Dubai Department of Civil
Aviation has not commented on the timing of the construction, although
the plot for the proposed new airport is clearly marked in the Dubai
government's master plan for the development of the emirate.
