Ben-Gurion Terminal 3 may be delayed again
Israel - The Jerusalem Post

Unless the Israel Airports Authority constructs a water purification
facility at Ben Gurion Airport's Terminal 3, the new facility may not
open as planned on November 2, 2004, Environment Ministry
Director-General Miki Haran warned Thursday, calling on the Interior
Ministry to block the new terminal's opening.

"Its inconceivable that a terminal built to handle some nine million
passengers annually does not have a sewage system," Haran told
journalists.

IAA officials claimed the master plan for the terminal had changed since
the IAA pledged to construct the facility seven years ago. A tender for
construction of a water purification plant for the terminal has recently
been published, the IAA noted.

Terminal 3, the new international gateway at Ben- Gurion, has been hit
by a series of delays since the late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin
launched the project in 1993.

Despite Haran's threat and her referral to the interior minister,
Terminal 3, costing some $900 million to construct, is expected to open
on November 2 with El Al Israel Airlines operating the first departure.

"This is one of the finest airport terminals I have ever seen," newly
appointed Transportation Minister Meir Sheetrit said Thursday during his
first visit to the facility as holder of the portfolio.

In a meeting with IAA officials, he was informed that the authority is
planning to hire some 700 new workers for the terminal, at a cost of NIS
170 million.

Terminal 3 will have three concourses encompassing 24 gates (eight in
each concourse) directly linking aircraft to the terminal, ending the
longstanding tradition of busing passengers to their respective. The
duty free area has been tripled, as have the check-in facilities and
arrival hall.
