Airport-area housing approved in compromise
By Kevin Leininger
The Fort Wayne (IN) News-Sentinel
One-hundred fifty-one homes could soon be less than 2 miles from Fort
Wayne International Airport -- even though neither airport officials nor
some county planners are especially happy about it.
The County Plan Commission today approved the Ashton Pointe neighborhood
at Kinnerk and Dunkelberg roads after airport officials dropped earlier
objections to the project. The commission delayed action on a proposal
in June because of concerns the housing development would not be
compatible with the airport. But airport officials and developer Ric
Zehr have reached an agreement that will require people buying homes in
Ashton Pointe to be informed of the possibility of airport-related
noise.
Even so, airport officials said they still would prefer industrial
development near Fort Wayne International -- a sentiment echoed by
County Commissioner and Plan Commission member Marla Irving.
"Fort Wayne International is key to our community and its economic
development. We need to be careful about how nearby land develops, and I
will be scrutinizing proposals near the airport more and more," Irving
said.
