AVIATION INDUSTRY EXPECTS AIR TRAFFIC TO TREBLE OVER THE NEXT 20 YRS
The Malaysian National News Agency
KUALA LUMPUR, (Bernama) -- Airbus, an aircraft manufacturer said that
the aviation industry expects a trebling of air traffic over the next 20
years.
In a statement today, Airbus said to accommodate future growth in air
traffic, large airports around the world await the arrival of Airbus all
new double-deck A380.
"To cope with this massive increase in passenger numbers, airports are
looking forward to receive the A380 as it offers a minimum change,
low-cost solution for their future growth," it said.
Adapting to the large capacity, Airbus said the A380 required
significantly less investment than accommodating growth through an
increase of movements by smaller aircraft, which requires the
duplication of existing infrastructure such as runways and taxiways.
The A380 provides a double noise benefit as it allows airlines to carry
more passengers with fewer flights, with each of these flights
generating half the noise compared to existing large aircraft.
Airbus said large aircraft operations were highly concentrated today
with 80 percent of current large aircraft movements concentrated into
less than 40 airports.
The aircraft manufacturer said that more than 60 airports would see A380
operations by 2010 and the A380 aircraft would be a boost for business.
"By 2016, we expect 60,000 A380 movements a year at London Heathrow.
This would enable nearly 10 million more passengers to fly to and from
Heathrow with no increase in flights," said Ery Smith, Business
strategy, planning and development director of British Airport Authority
(BAA) Heathrow.
Airbus is a global company with design and manufacturing facilities in
France, Germany, the UK and Spain, as well as subsidiaries in the US,
China and Japan. headquartered in Toulouse, France.
