Russia's Minvody airport to meet international standards by 2006 - 21/7

Russia - Itar-Tass
YESSENTUKI, (Itar-Tass) -- The North Caucasus's main gateway -
Mineralnyie Vody airport - will begin to be upgraded in the autumn. When
completed, the 300-million-dollar project will make the airport one of
the most sophisticated in the world.
An official of the Kavminvodyavia federal enterprise, Igor Zavyalov, has
said project and budget documentation was being prepared already. As for
upgrade work proper, it will begin in September to be completed in 2006.
The airport's registration and waiting lounges and luggage examination
and handling facilities will match the most advanced world standards.
All glass walls and windows will be replaced, a new international
terminal built and technological equipment and ramp machinery replaced.
The airport will have a new fuelling complex, because the wear rate of
the current one is as high as 90 percent. The hotel for passengers and
the parking area in front of the airport will undergo fundamental
repairs.
Local air personnel say the Mineralnyie Vody airport's history goes back
as far as July 15, 1925, when an airplane of the Dobrolyot company made
a landing near the city.
The airport acquired the status of an international one in the mid
1990s. Mineralnyie Vody has air links with countries in Europe, Asia and
Africa and is licensed to maintain air traffic with 48 cities in Russia
and the CIS.
Last year the airport serviced about one million passengers. At this
point it is already clear that this year's passenger traffic through
Mineralnyie Vody will be still bigger.
