TUI presents carrot and stick to Hanover airport
(Tui kampft um Flughafen Hannover)
GERMANY - HANDELSBLATT
TUI, Germany's and Europe's largest travel group, is reported to be
planning to increase the aircraft capacity of its airlines at Hanover
airport in northern Germany, and to be calling upon the airport, in
return, to reject plans by UK low-cost airline Easyjet to use the
airport. TUI is reported to be considering the addition of a further two
aircraft to the fleet of six operated by its airline subsidiaries
Hapag-Lloyd-Express (HLX) and Hapag-Lloyd-Flug at Hanover with the
introduction of the winter timetable in November, and also to be
considering new destinations in eastern Europe. However, it is said to
have threatened to withdraw its entire fleet from the airport if the
latter enters into a deal with the UK rival.
The travel group has declined to comment on any definite plans, but has
reported an easing of the differences between the two sides.
Furthermore, experts have expressed doubt as to whether it would be
possible for TUI to withdraw from Hanover. It is estimated that more
than 1,100 jobs would be lost at the airport if HLX and Hapag-Lloyd-Flug
were to withdraw.
