More passengers at UK airports
The Associated Press
LONDON, England (AP) -- The number of passengers traveling through Britain's
major airports rose 7 percent last month compared with June last year,
airports operator BAA said Friday.
The company, which runs Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports, and
facilities in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton, said it handled
12.8 million passengers in June 2004.
BAA cited big improvements on North Atlantic routes, where passenger numbers
grew 8.2 percent. Traffic on other long haul routes was up 17.8 percent and
European traffic rose 9.6 percent.
Stansted, a base for budget European carriers, saw the fastest growth of any
airport with passenger numbers up 10.7 percent last month to 1.8 million.
Heathrow, Britain's busiest hub, handled 5.9 million passengers, an increase
of 7 percent compared with a year before.
