Stronger economy, lower fares cited for higher anticipated airport
volumes
The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. -- A strengthening economy, low fares due to competition
and regional growth are responsible for an increase in anticipated
passenger volume at the region's three major airports over the July 4
holiday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Friday.

A total of 1.7 million passengers are anticipated to take off and land
at John F. Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark Liberty International Airports
from Wednesay, June 30, through Monday, July 5. That represents an
increase of more than 8 percent over a comparable six-day period in
2003.

Volume at Kennedy is expected to rise 13 percent, to 618,000 passengers,
while La Guardia is expected to handle 401,000 passengers, an increase
of 6.1 percent.

An increase of 5 percent, to 591,000 passengers, is expected at Newark,
the agency said.

"We see this as a strong sign that air traffic is rebounding," said Alan
Hicks, a Port Authority spokesman.
