Peru airport union threatens strike days ahead of Copa America
The Associated Press
LIMA, Peru - In a move that could rattle travelers leading up to the
Copa America, Peru's government airport workers union on Thursday
announced a strike during the first three days of July.
Peru hosts the Copa America, featuring South America's 10 CONMEBOL teams
and CONCACAF's Mexico and Costa Rica, from July 6-25.
Promoters hope to attract thousands of soccer fans from abroad to watch
matches in Lima, the capital, and in six other cities in the Peruvian
Andes and along the Pacific coast.
Union leaders said at a news conference that the 48-hour strike set to
begin at 7 a.m. on July 1 and end at 7 a.m. on July 3 comes in protest
of government plans to privatize provincial airports.
Airport workers have twice announced strikes in recent weeks, only to
call them off days later after reaching agreements with government
negotiators.
