Theft probe nets luggage screeners at airport
The New Orleans (LA) The Times-Picayune
Eight people suspected of pilfering items from suitcases being checked
at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport have been arrested,
a federal official charged with airport security said.
Airport officials received a tip that some federal screeners were taking
valuables from the bags in the process.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office was called and the two agencies
conducted a joint investigation, which ended with eight suspects being
arrested Monday by Jefferson deputies, said Michael Robinson, a security
director for the Transportation Security Administration.
"We have absolutely no tolerance for this sort of behavior," Robinson
said.
The names of the suspects were withheld by both the Transportation
Security Administration and Jefferson sheriff's officials Monday night.
Robinson said it is against TSA policy to release the names. Sheriff's
Office spokesman Col. Bob Garner said it is a federal investigation and
any information should come from the federal agency.
